Abstract

A unique copper-catalyzed cross-dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) of thiols and alkylbenzenes has been developed for the synthesis of thioesters without the assistance of any directing group. A thioester moiety is created via successive C[BOND]S and C[BOND]O bond formation at the expense of three sp3 C[BOND]H bonds of the alkylbenzene and one sp3 S[BOND]H bond of the thiol.
