An electron filtering buffer with high electron mobility and efficient exciton-blocking is employed in a hybrid planar-mixed heterojunction solar cell. The novel buffer can significantly reduce bimolecular recombination and exciton-polaron quenching, leading to a small-molecule photovoltaic cell with a power conversion efficiency of 8.1% ± 0.4% under 1 sun illumination.
