Iodine is an attractive material for Li-ion batteries because of its high theoretical energy density. With emphasis on the rechargeability and the rate capability compared to conventional lithium-iodine batteries, a cathode-flow aqueous lithium-iodine battery based on the highly reversible triiodide/iodide redox couple is proposed to construct a non-flammable and environmentally friendly cathode. As reported by Yu Zhao and Hye Ryung Byon on page 1630, this provides some of the highest power densities and cyclic efficiencies reported to date for lithium-iodine batteries, aqueous cathode batteries, and lithium-ion batteries using aqueous electrolyte.
