The Role of Initial Stresses in Lattice Dynamics



Considerations of the initial stress are introduced in the general lattice dynamics in discussing the symmetry of the elastic constants. It is proved that if one describes the infinitesimal elastic behaviour from the state S, the symmetry of the behaviour follows that of the state S but is independent of the magnitude of the initial stresses frozen in S. The bearing of the result on the current formulations of lattice elasticity is indicated.
