Abkühlung führt zur Spaltung der σ-Bindung bei der gegenseitigen Umwandlung des 1,3-Dibora-2,4-diphosphoniocyclobutan-1,3-diyls und seines Bicyclo[1.1.0]butan-Bindungslängenisomers (siehe Bild). Temperaturabhängige NMR- und UV/Vis-Experimente belegen erstmals die Existenz von zwei Bindungslängenisomeren. Deren auffälliges Merkmal ist eine transanulare bindende Überlappung von π-Elektronen, die am Ringschluss und an der thermischen Ringöffnung maßgeblich beteiligt sind.
