Ein molekularer Abakus: In einem [2]Rotaxan, das einen Halbaddierer mit AND- und XOR-Gatter nachstellt, sind alle Ein- (I) und Ausgaben (O) photochemisch (siehe Schema; F=Fluoreszenz, A=Absorbanz). Die reversible EZ-Photoisomerisierung um zwei Doppelbindungen (rot und dunkelblau) des Achsenmoleküls führt zu vier Konformeren mit unterschiedlichen spektralen Eigenschaften.
