Sukzessive Oxidationsprozesse in einem Eisen-Ruthenium-Heterodimetallkomplex (siehe Bild) „schalten“ die optischen Übergänge bei großen Wellenlängen. Diese linearen elektrochromen Effekte sind von Änderungen in den nichtlinearen optischen Eigenschaften des Komplexes begleitet.
