Hoch aktiv auf engem Raum: Das Polyoxometallat H3PW12O40, das in den Kanälen von mesoporösem Siliciumoxid von hydrophoben Alkylgruppen umgeben ist (siehe Bild), zeigt eine außergewöhnlich hohe katalytische Aktivität bei der Esterhydrolyse in Wasser. Wegen der auf mesoporösem Siliciumoxid basierenden Nanostruktur kann die wässrige Reaktionsmischung die aktiven Zentren einfach erreichen, obwohl sie von hydrophoben Einheiten umgeben sind.
