Zweidimensionale organische Synthese: Coadsorbiert an einer Au(111)-Oberfläche wurden ein Dialdehyd und ein Amin im Ultrahochvakuum in einer Kondensationsreaktion umgesetzt. Das Produkt, ein Diimin, bildet selbstorganisierte Strukturen auf der Oberfläche, die rastertunnelmikroskopisch untersucht wurden (siehe Aufnahme). Anhand von Dichtefunktionalrechnungen wird ein Vorschlag für einen lösungsmittelfreien Reaktionsweg gemacht.
