Die Lumineszenz eines Iridium(III)-2-Phenylpyridin-Komplexes kann zur Detektion von Proteinen in Natriumdodecylsulfat-Polyacrylamid-Gelen unter UV-Licht genutzt werden. Der hoch empfindliche Nachweis von histidinreichen Proteinen (rechts; links zum Vergleich ein nicht histidinmarkiertes Protein) deutet auf Anwendungsmöglichkeiten in der Signalgebung von Biomolekülen hin.
