Vollständig oxidierte Pterinliganden an Ruthenium(II)-Zentren werden zuerst am Stickstoffatom N1 der Pyrimidinon-Einheit protoniert. Eine anschließende Einelektronenreduktion löst eine beispiellose Protonenverschiebung von N1 zu N8 der Pyrazineinheit aus (siehe Bild; C weiß, H gelb, N blau, O rot).
