Eine doppelte C-H-Aktivierung ermöglichte die Herstellung von polycyclischen Arenen aus Arylindolen und Arylbenzofuranen in Abwesenheit einer dirigierenden Gruppe unter Verwendung von O2 als Oxidationsmittel (siehe Schema). So lassen sich leicht polycyclische Arene von präparativem und medizinischem Interesse herstellen; darüber hinaus zeigen einige der polycyclischen Heteroarene eine intensive Fluoreszenz.
