Auf direktem Weg: Kupferkomplexe sind hervorragende Katalysatoren für die direkte Carboxylierung von Heteroarenen mit CO2 unter C-H-Aktivierung, die auf ökonomischem und umweltverträglichem Weg zu heterocyclischen Carbonsäureestern führt (siehe Schema; IPr=1,3-Bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-yliden). Einige aktive Zwischenstufen dieser Reaktion wurden isoliert und strukturell charakterisiert.
