Entgegen der üblichen Annahme sind saubere Anatas{001}-Flächen weniger photoreaktiv als {101}-Flächen. Die höchste photokatalytische Reaktivität bei der Erzeugung von Hydroxylradikalen und der Wasserstoffbildung zeigten {010}-Flächen. Dies ergaben Untersuchungen an Kristallen, die hydrothermal so gezüchtet wurden, dass {001}-, {101}- oder {010}-Flächen vorherrschten (von links nach rechts in Bild (a) und der Bildreihe (b)–(d)).
