Zwei gemischtvalente Eisen-Cobalt- Cluster wurden mithilfe mehrzähniger Polypyridylliganden synthetisiert (siehe Bild: FeII orange, FeIII gelb, CoII blau, O rot). Eine siebenkernige Helix und ein Komplex mit einem [3×3]-Gitter entstehen abhängig vom Metallionenverhältnis. Den Ergebnissen von ESI-MS-Messungen zufolge könnte der helicale Cluster eine Zwischenstufe auf dem Weg zum gitterförmigen Komplex sein.
