Hervorragende Umwandlungseffizienzen in farbstoffsensibilisierten Flüssigkeits- (6.74 %) und Festkörper-Solarzellen (2.69 %) kennzeichnen den abgebildeten Squarain-Sensibilisator. Die Ursachen dafür sind sowohl die bathochrome Verschiebung des Absorptionsmaximums im Vergleich zu anderen Squarain-Sensibilisatoren als auch zusätzliche Absorptionen, die eine hohe Absorptivität über einen Großteil des sichtbaren Spektrums zur Folge haben.
