Bildgebende Massenspektrometrie diente zur Untersuchung von Mikroben am Scripps-Pier der Scripps Institution of Oceanography der University of California, San Diego (im Titelbild zu sehen), das sich im Pazifik befindet. P. C. Dorrestein et al. beschreiben in der Zuschrift auf S. 5961 ff., wie mithilfe dieser Technik die Chemie des Stoffwechselaustauschs zwischen Mikroben mit Änderungen des Phänotyps verknüpft und chemische Phänotypen entdeckt werden können, die mit bloßem Auge nicht beobachtbar sind.
