Ein röhrenförmiger Metallcluster, der 36 Gd- und 12 Ni-Atome enthält, wurde durch Selbstorganisation der Metallionen in der Anionenmatrix synthetisiert (siehe Bild mit der Anordnung der 48 Metallionen im Clusterkern). Die großen kryogenen magnetokalorischen Effekte, die dieser Cluster zeigt (siehe Diagramm der magnetischen Entropieänderung ΔSm), können mit dem großen Massenverhältnis zwischen Metall und Liganden erklärt werden.
