Eine einzige Verbindung aus B, C und N war der Ausgangspunkt für das Wachstum vertikal ausgerichteter BCN-Nanoröhren (VA-BCN-NTs). Dank einem synergistischen Effekt bei der Codotierung von C-Nanoröhren (CNTs) mit N und B zeigen die VA-BCN-NTs eine deutlich höhere elektrokatalytische Aktivität (z. B. Stromdichte) bei der Sauerstoffreduktion als nichtdotierte VA-CNTs, nur B- oder N-dotierte CNTs (VA-BCNT, VA-NCNT) und ein kommerzieller Pt/C-Elektrokatalysator (siehe Bild).
