Der Weg zum Zentrum: IscS-Cystein-Desulfurasen und IscU-Gerüste sind am Aufbau biologischer Eisen-Schwefel-Cluster beteiligt. Die Röntgenkristallstruktur eines anaerob produzierten, mutierten [Fe2S2-(IscS-IscUD35A)]2-Komplexes zeigt einen Cluster, der von drei IscU-Cysteinen und dem aktiven IscS-Cystein koordiniert ist (siehe Bild). Im Kristall an der Luft ist der Cluster zu einem Fe2S-S-Zentrum oxidiert.
