Beträchtliche Mengen an CO und O2 entstehen bei der photokatalytischen Umwandlung von CO2 an Doppelschichthydroxiden (LDHs) in Wasser (siehe Schema). Eine einfache Mischung von Metallhydroxiden mit derselben Elementzusammensetzung wie das LDH erzeugt nur wenig CO und O2. Als Kohlenstoffquelle in der Reaktion wurde gelöstes CO2-Gas identifiziert.
