Konjugate aus metallorganischen Osmiumcarbonyl-Clustern und Gold-Nanopartikeln (siehe Bild) zeigen ein starkes Carbonylsignal in der oberflächenverstärkten Raman-Spektroskopie. Die Einfachheit der Biofunktionalisierung sowie die hohe Stabilität und gute Dispergierbarkeit in wässriger Lösung machen diese Konjugate zu exzellenten Kandidaten für biomedizinische Anwendungen, wie am Beispiel der Abbildung lebender Zellen durch Carbonylsignale von OM-NP(PEG)-L-Konjugaten gezeigt wird.
