Bestrahlt man Filme aus einer porösen Chitosanmatrix, die Gold-Nanostäbe und temperaturempfindliche, mit chemischen Spezies beladene Micellen enthält, wird eine lokale photothermische Umwandlung der Gold-Nanostäbe ausgelöst. Die abgestrahlte Wärme aktiviert die Freisetzung der chemischen Spezies aus den Micellen (siehe Schema) und verursacht eine vorübergehende Permeabilisierung benachbarter Zellmembranen, was in einer kontrollierten und selektiven Aufnahme der chemischen Spezies in die Zellen resultiert.
