Grund zum Erröten: Eine chelatbildende nichtnatürliche Aminosäure mit einer 8-Hydroxychinolin-Gruppe (HqAla) kann enzymatisch in FPs eingebaut werden. Die Austausch eines Tyr-Restes im Chromophor von FPs gegen HqAla bewirkt eine merkliche Rotverschiebung der Anregungs- und Emissionsmaxima. Die Kristallstruktur von Superfolder-GFP mit HqAla im Chromophor zeigt die strukturelle Grundlage für diese Rotverschiebungen.
