Eine metallchelatisierende nichtnatürliche Aminosäure (UAA) mit einer 8-Hydroxychinolin-Einheit (HqAla) wurde enzymatisch in einer Stufe erhalten. In der Zuschrift auf S. 4905 ff. zeigen J. Y. Wang et al., dass der Einbau von HqAla in fluoreszierende Proteine deren Emissionsmaxima zu größeren Wellenlängen verschiebt (Rotverschiebung). Diese UAA konnte für das Engineering von Metalloproteinen und stärker fluoreszierenden Proteinen sowie für NMR-Spektroskopie paramagnetischer Proteine genutzt werden.
