Elementar! β-Rhomboedrisches Bor wurde als elementarer Photokatalysator untersucht. Borkristalle katalysieren die Bildung von HO.-Radikalen unter Bestrahlung mit sichtbarem Licht (siehe Bild); eine amorphe Oxidschicht auf der Oberfläche der Kristalle beeinträchtigte jedoch deren photokatalytische Aktivität.
