Die erste Angriffsstelle für ein freies N-heterocyclisches Carben (NHC) am Triosmiumcarbonylcluster [Os3(CO)12] ist ein Carbonylligand. Die entstehende zwitterionische Spezies (blau im Schema) ist stabil und wurde kristallographisch charakterisiert. Ausgehend von dieser Zwischenstufe kommt es zu einer CO-Substitution durch Abgabe einer CO-Gruppe und migratorische Deinsertion.
