7-Substituted bicyclo[2.2.2]octadienes such as (1) and (2) are of interest, e.g. as precursors of the potentially antiaromatic anion of (3) and its dibenzo analog (4). Compound (1) is obtainable from dihydrophthalic acid and methyl acrylate (Diels-Alder reaction, electrolysis, hydrolysis).
