The first tetracarbenium ion has now been synthesized as the tetraperchlorate (3) from the likewise new silyl-substituted Cmath image compound (1). The experimental findings suggest the intermediacy of the free nucleophilic carbene (2) (R [DOUBLE BOND] isopropyl).
