Stabilization of a negatively charged C atom by three PMe3 ligands proves so successful that the resulting compound (4) is stable towards air, water, and even trifluoroacetic acid, decomposing only at about 330 °C. According to X-ray analysis, [C(PMe3)3]2+ is trigonal-planar. The ylide (4) has also been synthesized from the likewise new trisphosphane (3) via the lithium salt [analogous to (1) → (2)] and its reaction with MeI.
