The only stable and unequivocally identified tetrahedrane is the tetra-tert-butyl derivative 1. According to an X-ray structure analysis of a low-temperature hexagonal modification the atomic coordinates show only slight deviations from the highest possible molecular Td symmetry. Due to the high degree of strain the C[BOND]C bonds in the tetrahedron are shorter than normal C[BOND]C single bonds.
