High molecular mass, uniform structure, and complete solubility characterize the novel ladder polymers 1. The formation of dication 2 from a model analogue of 1 by oxidation with 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyanobenzoquinone (DDQ) and subsequent dehydration with trifluoromethanesulfonic acid reveals that 1 is a potent precursor for the preparation of heteroanalogous, ionic poly[n]acenes.
