Cyclic fullerene–acetylene hybrids, a tris(fullerene)-cyclo-C15 (1) and a tetrakis(fullerene)-cyclo-C20 compound (2), were synthesized by Eglinton–Glaser coupling. Both oligomers fragment under MALDI-TOF MS conditions to give sequential loss of the C60 units, which potentially provides controlled access to the hitherto unknown free ions cyclo-C and cyclo-C. X = (EtO2CCH2O2C)2C.
