Activation of Carbonyl Compounds by Double Hydrogen Bonding: An Emerging Tool in Asymmetric Catalysis

original image

An exceptionally useful tool in the development of novel chiral catalysts for carbonyl chemistry is the activation of carbonyl groups by double hydrogen bonding (see scheme). A diverse set of reactions such as the asymmetric Diels–Alder, hetero-Diels–Alder, aldol, and Morita–Baylis–Hillman reactions can be accelerated by such double-hydrogen-bonding catalysts.
