Graphical Abstract

The Nobel Price in Medicine this year went to Richard Axel and Linda Buck, who elucidated the molecular basis of the olfactory reception of fragrances and the neuronal preprocessing of information in the olfactory system. From the viewpoint of a chemist, these studies offer fascinating perspectives. For example, they enable an understanding of the perception of odors by transmembrane proteins (see picture).
