Star- and dendritic-shaped polyolefins can be cleanly and stereospecifically mono- or bifunctionalized by catalytic cross olefin metathesis. Furthermore, this approach provides a rapid overall synthesis of water-soluble dendrimers (see picture) from simple polymethylbenzenes, such as mesitylene and hexamethylbenzene.
