Electron-rich mononuclear complexes of palladium(II) and rhodium(I) were obtained in good yields from dinuclear precursors and a bulky cyclic carbodiphosphorane ligand (see scheme). Their molecular structures show very long M[BOND]C distances in agreement with single bonds; that is, the carbodiphosphorane acts as a two-electron σ-donor ligand without π backdonation from the metal center.
