Sometimes it only takes one to tango: A novel ruthenium-catalyzed tandem cross-metathesis/intramolecular-hydroarylation reaction of alkenyl indoles has been developed which relies on a single catalyst for the tandem sequence and provides an efficient synthesis of fused polycyclic indole compounds with good to excellent overall yields (see scheme; Ts=4-toluenesulfonyl, DCE=1,2-dichloroethane, Mes=2,4,6-Me3C6H2).
