Reactions that look after themselves: Interfacial instabilities caused by chemical reactions can increase the area of contact between fluids and enhance their mixing or dispersion. Although instabilities in macroscopic liquid/liquid systems are well-understood, “reactive mixing” at molecular length scales presents a challenge and an opportunity for future research. The picture shows two-dimensional density fields of two miscible reactive fluids.
