Angewandte Chemie is a journal that is well-known and highly regarded all over the world. It is owned by the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker, the German Chemical Society, and is published by Wiley-VCH. For more than 125 years it has reported from the forefront of the chemical sciences. Its title already indicates that chemical results it publishes have a significant level of application (“Angewandte Chemie” translates as “Applied Chemistry”)—not necessarily by becoming a commercial product, but by impacting the scientific community and thus further developing our discipline and the disciplines surrounding us. Contemplating the ideas published in Angewandte Chemie as well as the concepts and visions that can be derived from them, allows us to experience cutting-edge chemistry. To achieve this, the team of editors and the editorial board set the course for developing chemistry as a scientific discipline into future. They bear a huge responsibility. A scientific journal like Angewandte Chemie globally influences the goals that are targeted by the chemistry elite and therefore it has to create a clear identity without becoming exclusive. It stands for the kind of chemistry that is mandatory for progress. It demonstrates the value of research. It creates space for scientific, scientific–political, and scientific–historical discussions. Last, but not least, it presents role models and goals for young chemists.
Compounds, substances, materials—no matter how we name the products that are synthesized by chemists, most relevant is that innovation through synthesis always originates from chemistry. The expertise in synthesizing substances is the center and unique feature of our science. This quality, plus that of equally important analysis and theory make chemistry the science of pioneers and a source of innovation in the world of pharmaceuticals and materials.
The quality of Angewandte Chemie is obvious from many parameters. When publishing in this journal authors prove that they fulfil highest possible standards. Today, 125 years after the foundation of Angewandte Chemie it is worth mentioning that these standards are by no means simple numbers that are easy to derive—performance indicators nowadays used by certain decision-making committees that try to measure the quality of scientific research. Results published in Angewandte Chemie are written, chosen, and reviewed by experts; and they display creative and original thinking. The sustainable and unquestionable success of Angewandte Chemie demonstrates the necessity of a careful, multi-dimensional, and thorough concept of publishing which serves and ennobles chemistry. The sustainable development of our science and its beacon-like character are unthinkable without Angewandte Chemie. The Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker takes pride in its flagship!
