A photoswitchable analogue of the cyclic antimicrobial peptide gramicidin S was created by using a reversibly photoisomerizable diarylethene scaffold. In their Communication on page 3392 ff., A S. Ulrich, I V. Komarov, and co-workers show that the biological activity of the resulting peptidomimetic could be effectively controlled by ultraviolet/visible light, as illustrated by a bacterial lawn treated with the modified gramicidin S and illuminated through a mask.
