      Platinum based catalytic materials have received significant attention, particularly in the shape and size control of faceted materials for catalysis. However, a fundamental understanding of controlled growth towards catalytic material design is essential for future implementation and broad application. In this review, we provide an overview of recent findings, focusing on methods for shape control as well as the effects of exposed surface facets on select catalytic reactions.

      Ruthenium(II) hydroxyquinoline-thiosemicarbazone complexes were synthesized and characterized. They have been assigned an octahedral structure from elemental and spectral studies. The new complexes were found to be efficient catalysts for the conversion of aldehydes to amides and for the oxidation of alkanes. The complexes have also catalyzed the N-alkylation of benzylamine.

      A series of N-heterocyclic carbene-PdCl2-imidazole [NHC-Pd(II)-Im] complexes were synthesized and the structure of most of them was unambiguously determined by X-ray single-crystal diffraction. In addition, structure-activity relationship of these complexes was investigated with the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling between 4-methoxyphenyl chloride and phenylboronic acid as the model reaction, based on which the effect of the NHCs and Im moieties were fully discussed.

      Novel acetoacetamide nickel complexes were synthesized, characterized, and used to catalyze norbornene polymerization with high activity. Remote steric and electronic effects of acetoacetamide ligand on catalytic activity and molecular weight were obviously observed.

      New half-sandwich η5-Cp*-rhodium(III) and η5-Cp*-ruthenium(II) complexes bearing bis(phosphino)amine ligands were prepared and characterized. These complexes were successfully applied to transfer hydrogenation of various ketones by 2-propanol.

      The palladacycle-catalyzed esterification of a variety of aldehydes with alcohols was developed. This reaction allows formation of esters inmoderate to excellent yields not only for various aldehydes but also alcohols. In addition, the esterification could proceed well under mild conditions with a low catalyst loading of 0.0625mol%.

      A series of palladium-NHC complex were prepared and their catalytical activity in the double carbonylation of aryl iodides to synthesize α-keto amides were examined. The influence of eachreaction parameter was studied in detail. The selectivity of was greatly influenced by reactiontemperature. Both electron-rich and electron-deficient aryl iodides afforded the corresponding α-keto amides in moderate to good yields.

      A N-heterocyclic carbene and phosphite synergistically enhanced Pd/C catalyst system has been developed for Suzuki coupling of aryl chlorides and aryl boronic acids. A dramatic ortho-substitution effect of carbonyl and nitrile groups in aryl chlorides was observed, which has been explained by a modified quasi-heterogeneous catalysis mechanism.
