Kinetics of heterogeneous polymerization of vinylidene chloride. I. Mechanism and modeling

Abstract

The similarities and differences between the heterogeneous polymerization of vinylidene chloride (VDC) and vinyl chloride (VC) were compared and analyzed. The effect of the poly(vinylidene chloride)(PVDC) crystal morphology on the kinetics of VDC polymerization was discussed. Based on the assumption that polymerization occurs in the monomer phase and on the edges of the PVDC lamellar crystals, a mechanism of VDC polymerization is proposed and then a kinetic model for VDC bulk/suspension polymerization is developed according to the elementary reactions.
