In the study by Yang Chen et al. on page 945, dynamic rheometry is used to detect the phase behavior of blends of low-density polyethylene (LDPE)/ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE)/UHMWPE blends. SEM images show liquid-solid phase separation due to different rates of crystallization between LDPE and UHMWPE. The UHMWPE chains cannot be dispersed well in LDPE matrix by melting blending. The SEM images of LLDPE/UHMWPE blends are consistent with the rheological properties, which show partial micro-phase separation. The results contribute to academic and commercial understanding of the processing and performance properties of blends containing different types of PE.
