FeCl3 doped poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is a convenient UV-curable organometallic polymer with potential application in optical data processing technologies and real-time holographic recording. Jörg Guido Schauberger et al. on page 3623 use a high molar mass polymer to study the effects of UV irradiation on PVA films. The image shows a micrograph of a silicon wafer that is coated with a UV-curable PVA/FeCl3 system. The sample is irradiated through a quartz-chromium mask, developed in deionized water, and dried under constant air flow. The micrograph is recorded with polarized light at a magnification of 100, and the obtained structures have a diameter of approximately 300 micrometers.
