Thermoplastic polyurethanes are useful commercial polymers, with applications in both industry and daily life because of their high tensile and flexural fatigue strength, excellent low-temperature flexibility, and outstanding abrasion resistance. However, due to their poor flame retardancy, thermal stability, and melt dripping behavior, they need improvement to meet industrial safety standards. In this study, Qiheng Tang, Yun Song, Jiyu He, and Rongjie Yang prepare a series of flame-retardant and anti-dripping thermoplastic poly(imide-urethane)s (TPIUs) by incorporating pyromellitic dianhydride as a flame retardant in the main chains using a two-step polymerization process. The results show that TPIUs exhibit excellent thermal and mechanical stabilities and flame-retardant properties. The cover shows the anti-dripping effect of TPIUs during the UL-94 vertical burning test. DOI: 10.1002/app.40801

Polyaniline is one of the most studied intrinsically conducting polymers due to its ease of synthesis, environmental stability, and the tunability of its electrical properties. Nanostructured polyaniline provides a much higher surface area than micro or macro-structured polyaniline enhancing its performance in surface sensitive applications. Sunil Dutt and Prem Felix Siril achieved morphology controlled synthesis of polyaniline nanostructures using swollen liquid crystals as structure directing templates. Swollen liquid crystals are formed by a quaternary mixture of surfactant, co-surfactant, water, and oil. A mixture of aniline and cyclohexane was used as the oil phase to prepare aniline containing swollen liquid crystals. The cover features a polarized optical microscopic image of the mesophase containing aniline. (DOI: 10.1002/app.40800)

Hydrogels are endowed with functional groups such as hydroxyl, carboxyl, and diamides to enhance adsorbate–adsorbent interactions. The present study by Rohini Kuttiplavil Narayanan, Navya Kuttamassery Nethran, Sudha Janardanan Devaki and Talasila Prasada Rao investigates the mechanism and kinetics of adsorption, swelling, and diffusion, which are important factors when considering pilotplant scale applications. The mechanical strength of the hydrogel is improved by polymerization of acrylic acid in the presence of amidodiol. The cover features the schematic representation of the polymeric hydrogels based on polyacrylic acid cross-linked by the rigid rod-like molecule, amidodiol. (DOI: 10.1002/app.40908)
