An important objective for mature oilfields is the reduction in water production of oil wells, which is often accomplished by polymer flooding, a chemical method that involves the injection of polymers into fractures or high-permeability zones. Cationic and anionic polymers are studied by Caili Dai et al. as a moderate water shutoff agent for oil well treatment. The cover shows a cationic polymer initially adsorbed on mica, and an anionic polymer adsorbed on sites of the cationic polymer due to electrostatic interactions. The alternative adsorption of cationic and anionic polymers leads to the formation of a dense and stable adsorption multilayer on the mica surface. The adsorption multilayer can plug the high permeability zones. As a result, the residual oil is driven out, and oil recovery is improved. DOI: 10.1002/app.39462

The adhesion of rubber compounds to brass-plated steel cords is particularly significant in radial tires. Xinyan Shi et al. summarize the advantages and disadvantages of existing test methods, and introduce a novel testing technique for the dynamic adhesion of rubber/steel cords. The surfaces of “pulled-out” steel cords are examined by stereoscopic zoom microscope. Before and after fatigue, the covered rubber on the pulled-out cords forms a “screw thread” form; while the greatest pulled-out force corresponds to clearer, more uniform, screw-like rubber coverage with finer screw threads. The cover image shows micrographs of rubber coverage on pulled-out steel cords. The new method is very simple, reliable, and does not require extra capital investment. DOI: 10.1002/app.39460

Polymer/hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) composites have attracted attention as heat dissipative materials for numerous electronic devices. Shusuke Yoshihara et al. reveal that a perpendicular relationship between the polymer and h-BN platelet orientations results in a dramatic enhancement of the composite thermal conductivity. The cover image shows crystalline lamellae align along the h-BN platelets, which are closely stacked one above the other. Polymer chains align perpendicularly to the platelets and behave as effective heat paths between the platelets, leading to the formation of a continuous thermal network. DOI: 10.1002/app.39768
