The semicrystalline polymer, poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA), is used to fabricate scaffolds by thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) for various engineering applications in tissues such as bone, nerve, and cartilage. Liumin He et al. use PLLA to prepare a 3D fibrous network with nanoscale fiber diameters. The physicochemical properties of the solvent and polymer together influence the properties of the solution and the thermodynamic development upon quenching. The crystallization behavior of PLLA further affects cell growth in the scaffold. The cover shows a microscopy image of the PLLA scaffolds. This first system investigation provides a valuable reference for scaffold fabrication and its application in tissue engineering. DOI: 10.1002/app.39436

Polyurethane (PUR) foam of low spatial filling (P1 < 10%) is a polymer-gas composite. Its structure is a spatial network of polymeric struts, nodes, and films that are organized into cells. The cellular structure is well-suited for mathematical modeling to determine effective physical and mechanical properties in connection with its symmetry of structure. The PUR foam capacity of free rise in an open mold of comparable planar dimensions leads to the symmetry mode of transtropy. The cover by Ilze Beverte shows light microscopy images of transtropic, free rise PUR foam with a density of 35 kgm−3, P1 < 3%. The image plane is perpendicular to the foam symmetry axis, collinear to the rise direction. DOI: 10.1002/app.39477

Scale formation is a widespread problem in water treatment and water desalination processes. By controlling their molecular weight, the properties of antiscalants can be improved. Polymers are generally of low molecular weight, which prevents the bridging of suspended solids, but of sufficient structure to adhere to developed scale formations, acting as anti-precipitants and de-scalants. The cover shows the change of crystal habit, size, and modifications brought about by the addition of the YMR-A polymer for CaCO3 and CaSO4 crystals by Yousef Alroomi and Kaneez Hussain. The results show that YMR-A series polymers are highly effective scale inhibitors. DOI: 10.1002/app.39827
