The formation of a network at a high carbon nanofiller content can remarkably improve the thermal conductivity of polymers. The cover by Jing-Bin Chen et al. shows a micrograph of dense carbon nanotube (CNT) and graphene nanosheet (GNS) networks. Because of the different dimensionalities of carbon nanofillers, the connection types in these two networks differ: CNTs link to each other in a dot-to-dot manner, while GNSs exhibit plane-to-plane connections. The disparity of microstructures in the networks leads to diverse influences on the crystallization kinetics of iPP. The nanofiller networks show two competitive effects on iPP crystallization: the nucleation effect and the confinement effect. The CNT network has stronger nucleation and confinement effects than the GNS network. DOI: 10.1002/app.39505

Highly transparent, flexible films with increased gas permeability and good mechanical properties-suitable for fresh vegetable packaging—are formulated and produced by melt blending a commercial polypropylene matrix with a poly(4-methyl-1-pentene)-based material. Santolo Taglialatela Scafati et al. present a simple but effective way to tune the permeability of polyolefin-based monolayer films for the popular food packaging industry. The results demonstrate the potential of such innovative blends, which can be processed under the conditions already adopted for polypropylene matrices that are used industrially. Thermally conductive polymer composites have attracted attention as heat dissipative materials for numerous electronic devices. Shusuke Yoshihara et al. describe the high thermal conductivity (TC) of smectic liquid crystalline polyester/magnesium oxide (MgO) composites and reveal that the polyester can function as an isotropic matrix with 1.0 W m−1 K−1, which is 5 times as high as those of common polymers. Such an unusually high TC for a polymer matrix is attributed to some polymer lamellae that lie parallel to the particle surface and are stacked toward neighboring particles, thus creating heat paths between the particles. The cover image shows a polarized optical micrograph of the crystal domains around the MgO particles. DOI: 10.1002/app.39896
