As the article by Stamm et al (1) so ably points out, the development of osteoarthritis of the hands can be inhibited or improved with appropriate nonmedication approaches to retain and regain function. In their recommendations, the authors omit mentioning the overnight wearing of two-way stretch gloves (nylon and spandex). As we have demonstrated (2), and others later confirmed (3), wearing these gloves in early disease stages can actually prevent nodal development, and can reduce the size of the nodes and enhance function in later stages. I recommend this simple, nonsurgical intervention in addition to the measures advocated by Stamm et al.
